Current Lake Michigan RTS Updates: 04/29/20
What a strange time it is…
I’ve said this and heard this more times than I can count in the last month. Honestly? I’m tired of hearing it and I’m tired of saying it. It’s been long enough for everyone that “strange” is now ordinary. So how do we plan for the “new normal”?
Over the last several weeks, we’ve all had our own crystal balls out trying to predict when we’ll all be able to gather in large groups for races. The only answer I’ve come up with so far, is “not yet”. I’ve also received several emails and questions about the status of Lake Michigan RTS. Many are curious if we are going to cancel, postpone, or switch to virtual- the answer is still “not yet”.
As our committee works through what an event could look like in July, or if an event could happen in July, my goal is to keep the loyal Lake Michigan RTS audience informed. You’ve shown what this event means to the community by signing up, and selling it out in record time. This year, with the addition of the 5k, we’ve been ready to host the largest event field to date. No doubt, it will be a beautiful day on the Lake Michigan coast, no matter what. Our decision about next steps will be made with the absolute health and safety of participants, volunteers and staff in mind. Nothing short of what’s best for our community and the individuals who make it up will be considered. We will plan to make a decision, with the facts available to us, by May 20.
In the meantime, I want to take a moment to acknowledge our community partners who have supported Lake Michigan RTS and Gazelle Sports in building such an incredible event experience.
Our presenting sponsor, Michigan Awesome, continues to celebrate the great state of Michigan with unique gifts that you can order online. Big Lake Brewing is open for takeout, beer and delicious food! Although temporarily closed, Peachwave of Holland is a summer staple in Holland and looking forward to serving froyo this summer. A special thank you also goes out to the Graafschap Fire Department for volunteering their time to keep participants safe year after year. You can see the remaining list of recent partners at the “sponsor” tab on our website.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to see through the fog in our crystal ball for Lake Michigan RTS. Keep running, keep enjoying this beautiful state and the natural spaces it has to offer, and keep supporting each other. After all, we’re still in this together.
