Materials That Make a Difference

To help protect the future of sport, Nike is determined to protect the planet, diligently working toward zero carbon and waste. Since materials used make the most significant impact, they’ve continued to find innovative ways to transform existing plastics, yarns, and textiles into sustainable materials:

  • Recycled nylon from carpet and fish net reduces carbon emissions by up to 50%.
  • Recycled polyester lowers carbon emissions by up to 30%; diverts an average of 1 billion plastic bottles annually from landfills and waterways.
  • Sustainable cotton is 100% certified organic, recycled, or Better Cotton sourced through the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI).
  • Flyknit from plastic bottles averages 60% less waste compared to traditional footwear manufacturing.
  • Flyleather binds at least 50% of recycled leather fibers with synthetic, using a water-powered process to create less waste and lower impact.
  • Nike Air – made with at least 25% recycled manufacturing waste, since 2008, and powered by 100% renewable energy since 2020.
  • Nike Forward – uniquely made from ultra-thin, needle-punched layers, with a reduced carbon footprint of 75% on average when compared to traditional knit fleece.
